Exercise MAPLE DEFENDER 11-23 August 2007

Capt Tim Fletcher

Training never ends for the soldiers of The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, whether it involves a section of eight soldiers or hundreds from the RHLI and soldiers from all over Ontario.  Such was the case for Exercise MAPLE DEFENDER, held at the massive Combat Maneuvre Training Centre (CMTC) in Wainwright, Alberta from 11-23 August, 2007.

CMTC is heavily-instrumented with motion sensors, CCTV, remote special effects and more.  Built like a small town, the exercise staff can set off explosions, create fires, simulate gunfire, and track the movements of hundreds of soldiers as they assault the “town” and move through its streets, buildings – and even sewers.

The RHLI sent more than a platoon of troops to the training, some of the most complex and demanding they’ve ever taken part in.  Now, they have brought that experience and their new skills back to pass on to the rest of the unit!
