Exercise Maple Storm, Meaford - May 3-5 2002

Story and Photos by Captain Tim Fletcher

The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry had a chance to show it's capabilities recently during training at the Canadian Forces Training Area near Meaford, close to Owen Sound on Georgian Bay. The weekend of 3-5 May saw the "Rileys" deploy a full company of troops as part of Exercise Maple Storm. The training was a combat readiness evaluation of all 15 units, including the RHLI, which make up 31 Canadian Brigade Group.

As the photos show, it was an exceptional weekend, with a huge variety of tasks including deliberate attacks, advance to contact, reconnaissance patrols and more. Artillery, engineer, armoured and combat service support units worked together with the RHLI and other infantry units to provide a comprehensive test of a reserve brigade in action. The RHLI acquitted itself very well, showing the quality of soldiers and leaders in close-knit, combat-capable infantry unit.
