Training is vital to the success of the Canadian Army and the RHLI. As part of 31 Canadian Brigade Group, the RHLI train constantly to keep their skills honed sharp. Experienced soldiers, many now veterans with combat experience, help newer soldiers come up to speed in the knowledge needed for actual operations.
Exercise Maple Storm I (18-20 April) and II (9-11 May) were Brigade-level events built around likely operational scenarios. Using the fictional – but reality-based – “West Isle”, soldiers worked from a Forward Operating Base, or “FOB” to patrol and take control of their designated area. This involved meeting with the local population, dealing with tribal leaders, engaging in patrols and finally seeking out insurgents in a built-up area to free the local population from their domination and create a safer environment for progress.
Today’s training is based on constant feedback from operational theatres, and prepares the RHLI very well for today’s combat environment.
