The RHLI is a large Regimental family, with serving soldiers, retired and former members, family members, our regimental Association and community supporters. Every year at Christmas, we provide an opportunity for these groups to get together for a special meal at the Armouries. Sponsored by our Regimental Senate, which contributes significantly to the dinner's costs and pays for the refreshements, the evening contributes to esprít de corps and the RHLI's place in the community.
It's an evening for honours and awards as well. Recognition is important to everyone and good performance should be not only be rewarded but rewarded when possible in front of one's peers.
The photos tell the story! The RHLI is a strong unit and our annual Christmas dinner is one of the reasons.
With the end of our direct combat mission in Afghanistan, and with more than 60 Rileys having served there, the Regimental Committee presented the Regiment, through our RSM, with a special plaque.
It reads:
"This Plaque is to commemorate the Overseas Service by Members of the Regiment, since the fall of the Soviet Union.
In this era, Canada and her allies have had to engage in various NATO Peacekeeping missions and war-fighting in Afghanistan.
Pre-dating Confederation, the citizen-soldiers of this Regiment have bravely responded whenever danger has threatened…and true to this heritage, scores of Soldiers of the RHLI answered the Call to Duty and served with Honour and distinction in those distant Theatres.
Let these words remind all who follow that those who serve under the Colours of the RHLI shall always represent the best of the Canadian Soldier.
PRESENTED TO Regimental Sgt-Major CWO Brian Robinson December 6, 2011
in recognition of the safe return of all the RHLI Veterans from the Afghan conflict."
